In Revenants of Sophie, Kat is hearing voices and gets shot. When she wakes a young girl comes to her rescue and we learn how to hunt for criminals in the dark web. But it all falls apart, and things don't quite work out as expected. More shots are fired. People die, while some are reunited in a sad story that will pull at your heartstrings. Seven other dark stories explore the flawed side of humanity and take you on a journey through autumn as it comes slowly. Includes the Award Winning collaborative story with David Conyers Winds of Nzambi, and the darkest award-winning fiction story yet Harry's Dead Poodle.

Autumn Comes Slowly edition by David Kernot David Conyers Literature Fiction eBooks

Autumn Comes Slowly by David Kernot is a diverse collection of eight speculative fiction stories encompassing a wide range of genres including brutal visceral horror, poetry, science fiction and detective styled stories.

Proceedings are kicked off with the deliciously dark and twisted tale that is "Harry's Dead Poodle." It is all about a man, his dog, a lunchbox and his neighbour. I won't go beyond that in a description. This is one of those stories that you read and a cold chill goes down your spine. It is raw, in your face and has a great finale. My only word of advice would be not to read before you have your dinner!

That raw feeling or "eurghhh" factor as I like to call it is reinforced by the next written selection "Night". It reminds me of when I was a kid and my parents would tuck me up snug in bed and whisper "Nighty Night. Hope the bed bugs don't bite!" in my ear. They always seemed so surprised when I would appear next to their bed later on saying "can't sleep". This tale does nothing to quell those childhood fears. If you have ever had a fear about creepy crawlies and sleep then you may want to skip this one.

The next three stories, whilst still dealing with fairly dark subject matter, have an almost poetic and lucid dreamlike quality to the writing. The first of these "Dawn's First Kiss" is a poetic hymn to the bleak sights that results from messing about creating art near transport. It's a complete stylistic gear shift from the previous two stories and this is then amplified by the hallucinatory style of "The Moon When Autumn Comes Slowly". Much like "Night" it deals with the tortured nature of relationships and how a person deals with their own personal guilt. "The Wood Moths" also has a dreamy-ish edge to its simple tale of a girl's transformation from ugly duckling as a girl to grown woman.

The Scarlet Runners manages to weave Mayan Prophecy, meteorites, beans and the end of the world into a weird science fiction tale. This is then followed by "Winds of Nzambi". This is a story written in collaboration with fellow Australian David Conyers. This, much like the introductory story, is a raw and bleak slice of premium horror served hot and bloody. Set on a slave ship, it chronicles the slow disintegration of relationships and trust between two brothers and their tribe in the face of a particularly nasty Lovecraftian beast. Brutal and bleak do not do this story justice!

The final story is "Revenants of Sophie". Like many of the stories contained herein, it is about how people deal with broken relationships, guilt and loss. In this case, it is how a detective deals with the loss of his daughter and tracks down the killer through her ghostly guiding hand. It is by no means a feel good story but it does have a lot of style and atmosphere about it.

So, if you are looking for something a bit different and out of the ordinary I would recommend you try this. If you like your speculative fiction dark, visceral, gritty or just well written you could do a lot worse than investing your money and time in these dark dreams.
